‘Water War’ Could Keep Rolling Along
Sunshine State News published an article about the long-term legal battle between Florida and Georgia over water flow into the Apalachicola River. Lash & Goldberg LLP Senior Counsel Jonathan Williams was quoted in the article following his participation in a conference at Florida State University on the Apalachicola River and Apalachicola Bay system. Among the sponsors of the River Conference was the Florida Conservation Coalition, a group co-founded by former U.S. Sen. and Gov. Bob Graham. Mr. Williams was one of the legal experts who discussed a water-usage cap that could be imposed on Georgia by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Although the lawyers and Florida officials have expressed optimism about the case based on the tone of the Justices’ questions during oral arguments, Mr. Williams, a former Deputy Solicitor General for the State, who was involved in the case while he was with the Attorney General’s Office, said he was taking a cautious view.
“Oral arguments are often not great predictors of what the ultimate outcome is going to be, particularly in cases that are as complicated as this one is,” said Mr. Williams.
